Gender diversity matters when it comes to attracting top female talent

This blog post was written by Mary Pharris of Fairygodboss for our 2018 PowHer The Vote campaign.

As the largest career community for women, Fairygodboss has insights into what a wide range of professional women are experiencing at work. While each woman has distinct workplace challenges and triumphs, one thing is for certain: gender diversity matters when it comes to recruiting, retaining and engaging top female talent.

There have been a multitude of studies to showcase the value of having women on corporate boards and in leadership. We know the business case and the data to back it up exists, so instead I want to focus on how factors like diversity, inclusion and having women in leadership are driving workplace satisfaction among female employees.

I believe that in 2018, women are noticing—and feeling the effects of—inequities like unequal pay and disproportionate male-dominated leadership more acutely than ever.

So what do women in the FGB Community have to say? At a very high level, women are generally satisfied, with the majority of women ranking their job satisfaction at a 4 on a 1-to-5 scale. Additionally, 58 percent of FGB’ers say they would recommend their company to other women, and 60 percent believe their company treats women and men fairly.

While these numbers may seem generally positive, when you consider the fact that nearly 40 percent of women still perceive inequality at work, that means we have plenty of work to do. Moreover, 46 percent of women in our community rank their job satisfaction below a 4—and the biggest drivers of dissatisfaction at work include unequal promotion and unequal pay.

Meanwhile, we know that when women perceive more gender equality at their companies based on access to flexible working schedules, family friendly policies, promotions, and their CEO’s emphasis on gender equality, they report higher job satisfaction.

At Fairygodboss, we’re obsessed with increasing transparency—which is why, in addition to our anonymous reviews, we’re proud to offer free, accessible tools like our maternity leave resource center, and salary database, free and rankings of the best companies for women (which are based solely on the feedback we received from women in our community!).

We’re encouraged by the balanced and constructive feedback we receive from women who use Fairygodboss to illustrate what kinds of programs and benefits their employers offer—or don’t. Each woman who leaves a review is helping to make the workplace better for all women by shedding light on what it’s really like to be a woman at her company. These insights not only help job seekers distinguish which companies might be a good fit for them, but they also help employers who are working toward making their cultures and benefits more inclusive and supportive of women.

To attract, engage and retain top female talent, companies need to showcase why their workplace is great for women. The most successful companies will take a multifaceted approach and highlight supportive benefits they offer, like paid leave and flexible working schedules, and will also emphasize that there are women in leadership positions. Why? Nearly a quarter of women in our community said they would be more likely to stay with their current company if more women were promoted into leadership roles.

And with only 25 women leading Fortune 500 companies, we believe that now, perhaps more than ever, the need for gender diversity and female leadership at the highest levels of organizations is paramount. Women in the FGB Community are vocalizing that need, and by sharing their experiences and equipping themselves with information, they’re helping to make it a reality.
