A new report from the American Association of University Women on the state of the pay gap found all kinds of sneaky ways that the wage gap is making life harder for women — and pointing out exactly why it’s high time so many people stopped trying to pretend that it doesn’t exist.

In countries around the world, the ways in which men and women spend their time are unbalanced. Men spend more time working for money. Women do the bulk of the unpaid work — cooking, cleaning and child care. This unpaid work is essential for households and societies to function. But it is also valued less than paid work, and when it is women’s responsibility, it prevents them from doing other things.

Cuomo today announced the third annual Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises Opportunities Expo Series, which will take place in the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier, Western NY, and Long Island. Despite a low unemployment rate and modest economic growth, many people continue to struggle to make ends meet, particularly as the cost of living continues to rise. Wages have not recovered to pre-2007 levels, but the cost of education, transportation, healthcare and housing have increased exponentially. Women, especially younger, unmarried and minority women, are particularly stressed especially if they have caregiving or financial responsibility for their children or their parents. The following memo is based on a national online survey of 800 registered voters, with an oversample of 200 millennial women (ages 18-35) female voters, for a total sample size of 1,000 registered voters, weighted to be representative of registered voters nationally. The survey was conducted from December 7-10, 2015.
