What you need to know about Board Diversity Bills 704 and 705

Council Members Elizabeth Crowley and Darlene Mealy introduced legislation that would require the City to collect gender and racial diversity data on the boards and executive staff of companies that contract with the City. This information would be reported to the Mayor and City Council on an annual basis. In addition, this legislation would require companies to disclose diversity goals and measures taken to achieve such goals. This legislation is in the form of two bills: Introduction 704 requires gender disclosure and Introduction 705 requires racial disclosure.

This legislation has been introduced to further promote transparency concerning the composition of leadership positions at the many companies the City procures goods and services from each year. Additionally, numerous studies and data show that companies with diverse boards perform better in both economic and social terms. These bills are currently supported by twenty-three Council Members, including the Council’s Women’s Caucus.
