A Palm Card for Your Next Manicure

I am often asked, “What can I do to help the cause of women’s economic equality?” One answer is in the palm of your hand.

Revelations of wage and health abuses in the nail salon industry has jump started a surprisingly rapid response by government. Governor Cuomo stepped up by calling the alarm and introducing legislation and outreach, as did NYC officials. But really, isn’t it the customer who is in the best seat to ensure that this exploitation of female workers stops?

At a press conference today, Gov. Cuomo called on customers to boycott bad nail salons and patronize good ones. To do that, you need some tools at your finger tips.

At your next manicure, use this “palm card” to lend a helping hand to the women who polish it.

Five Things to Ask When Entering Nail Salons:

1. Are workers paid at least minimum wage and overtime?
2. Is appropriate protective equipment provided to workers and used?
3. Is there adequate ventilation?
4. Is the salon business license posted in plain sight?
5. Is the Nail Salon Workers’ Bill of Rights posted in plain view?
