Babygate: A New Resource on Pregnancy and Family Discrimination

Reposted from A Better Balance.

To mark the anniversary of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, we wanted to share with you our new online resource to help educate parents, parents-to-be, and caregivers about their rights in the workplace.

Today, is the 36th anniversary of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, but there are still constant reminders of discrimination in the workplace based on pregnancy and family status. There are people like Angelica Valenica, our client who was pushed out of her job when pregnant because she needed to avoid working overtime. Angelica’s story – in last week’s “The Working Life” column in The New York Times – is just one of many reasons that we launched babygate.abetterbalance.org.

This website is one of a kind, a state-by-state guide breaking down pregnancy and parenting laws in an easy-to-use way. For parents and parents-to-be who are already navigating all the changes that come with expanding their families, figuring out complicated laws in the workplace shouldn’t be among them.

This resource provides invaluable information about common questions: Can you get fired for morning sickness? How should you announce a pregnancy in the workplace? Are you legally entitled to a break so you can pump breast milk?

A Better Balance gets phone calls on our hotline from people all over the country dealing with pregnancy and caregiver discrimination issues, and we hope this resource will be the first step in empowering individuals to know their rights.

Yesterday we also partnered with Working Mother for a Facebook chat to talk about workplace rights for new moms. We answered questions about announcing your pregnancy at work, making arrangements to pump after you have returned from leave, and what to do if you experience bias and discrimination.  You can read all the answers here.
