On Veterans Day, AAUW remembers the sacrifice and the service of our women veterans and service members. The number of female veterans has soared since 1990, from 4 percent of all veterans to 8 percent today, or about 1.8 million. More than 280,000 female soldiers have been returned from deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last decade.
Women in the United States are paid less for equal work than men in all industries and a new report released on Thursday showed the widest discrepancy in wages is between married men and women with children. Fathers earned the highest overall median salaries at about $67,900, compared to $46,800 for married mothers, and single women with children had the lowest median salary at $38,200.”The gender pay gap is absolutely real,” said Aubrey Bach, senior editorial manager of PayScale Inc., the online salary, benefits and compensation information company that compiled the report.

The number of women serving in New York’s Legislature will hit a record high in January, with women occupying 55 of the 213 seats in the Senate and Assembly. On Tuesday, there were five special elections for seats vacated by male legislators who had either been convicted of a felony or left office voluntarily. The Democratic candidate in each of these races was a woman; four of them won.

That was the year in which Elizabeth Cady Stanton, together with other feminist activists, convened the Seneca Falls convention, which launched the women’s rights movement in this country.
